In 1997, Craig S. Young developed the REI (Repertoire Evaluation Instrument) to evaluate the quality
of the existing Wind Band Repertoire as part of his Ph.D. dissertation at The Ohio State University

to read an abstract). Utilizing lists by prominent conductors, an adjudication panel, and significant research,
including studies by Ostling (1979) and Gilbert (1993), the study identified
530 compositions that
were deemed to contain a significant level of quality
